Understanding Gel Coat & Oxidation — And How to Protect Your Investment

Gel Coat is the glossy, protective finish applied to fiberglass RVs and boats — think of it as the “paint” that gives your rig or vessel its shine. Like automotive paint, it breaks down over time due to exposure to sunlight, weather, and the elements.

The best way to maintain your Gel Coat?

  • Regular hand washing with a soft mitt

  • Frequent waxing or professional ceramic coating

The more consistent your maintenance, the longer your boat or RV will stay looking showroom-ready.

The #1 Enemy: Oxidation

The most common wear we see on RVs and boats is oxidation — that dull, chalky film that appears over time from sun exposure or, in the case of boats, constant contact with water.

You might have heard of DIY shine boosters like Poli Glow — but these are just temporary fixes. Products like these often mask the problem, creating a shiny coating that quickly fades and ultimately requires more work and cost down the road.

Our Long-Term Solution: Polish + Ceramic Protection

We don’t cover up oxidation — we remove it.

Our approach is simple and effective:

  1. Polish away the oxidation to restore your Gel Coat’s natural shine.

  2. Seal in that finish with a high-quality Ceramic Coating.

With proper maintenance, a ceramic coating typically lasts:

  • 2–4 years on RVs, depending on usage and exposure

  • 1–2 seasons on boats, with saltwater environments wearing coatings faster than freshwater

The Earlier You Act, the More You Save

Oxidation is inevitable — but the earlier you address it, the less it costs.

  • Light oxidation? We can often do a quick 1-step polish and coat it affordably.

  • Heavy oxidation? That’s a 2-step process with a cutting compound and polish.

  • Severely neglected Gel Coat? Sometimes it requires wet sanding before we can even start polishing — a full 3-step restoration.

On large RVs or boats, this can get expensive fast.

Protect Your Shine Before It’s Gone

Whether you’re seeing early signs of oxidation or want to avoid it altogether, we’re here to help. Regular washes and seasonal coatings extend the life of your Gel Coat and protect your investment long-term.

RV/Boat Pricing

RV & Boat Detailing — Priced by the Linear Foot (LF)

RVs and boats come in all shapes and sizes, which is why we price our services by the Linear Foot (LF) — the most efficient, fair, and transparent method for both you and us.

Pricing always includes the roof.

Wash, Wax & Hand Dry

$12-30 per LF (Per Condition)

Price depends on height (ex. Travel trailer/camper or 5th wheel/motorhome) and current condition. On most 5th wheel/motorhomes, we average $15/LF. On shorter travel trailers & Slide in Campers, you can expect around $12/LF

This package includes a full exterior wash, wax, and hand dry. If your rig is heavily soiled (ex. growing moss) thats where the price starts to creep to the $20-$30/LF range.

Why the price range? Heavily soiled RVs require extra care. We never pressure wash sensitive areas like caulking joints or seals, as that could cause serious damage. Instead, we pre-treat stuck-on grime or moss with specialized solutions, followed by an intensive hand wash to clean safely and thoroughly.

We take pride in protecting and preserving your investment — our pricing reflects that commitment to quality.

Oxidation Removal + Ceramic Coating Package

$35–$125 per LF

Includes wash, prep, hand dry, full oxidation removal, and ceramic coating

This package is ideal for RVs and boats that are showing signs of oxidation or have gone without detailing for some time.

We always include Ceramic Coating with oxidation removal
This ensures long-term protection and prevents premature re-oxidation.

  • Example 1:

28ft RV with little to no oxidation

We wash, prep, perform a 1-step polish, and apply a ceramic coating

    → $35/LF = $980 before tax

→ Your rig looks brand new for years.

  • Example 2:

28ft RV with years of moss and oxidation

We wash, prep, sand, cut, polish, and ceramic coat — a full 3-day restoration

→ $125/LF = ~$3,500 to restore your gel coat to “like new” condition

Most of our customers fall within the $35–$85 per LF range, depending on how many polishing stages are needed after preparation.

Whether You Need a Quick Wash or Full Restoration — We’ve Got You Covered

No matter the condition of your rig, we’re here to help you protect it. From a simple wash and wax to a complete gel coat restoration, we treat every RV and boat with the same care and attention to detail as if it were our own.
